Pre-Broadway run of Blackbeard

Chinchilla Theatrical Sound supplied design, engineering and equipment services for the out of town Pre-Broadway engagement of Blackbeard the Musical presented at the prestigious Herberger Theatre Center. Designers for the production were Brett Rothstein and Jeremy Oleksa. A Yamaha PM1D was utilized at the front of house with EAW mains covering the orchestra and balcony seating. The show featured a full 16 piece orchestra which presented its own set of challenges. "The Herberger has a beautiful stage and house but is very reflective," explains associate designer Jeremy Oleksa. "We had to be very careful and precise when tuning the room as with 16 pieces in the pit the sound reflects into the balcony very easily and can overpower the vocals. It was a fine balancing act especially in the upper sections of the balcony to ensure that the vocals were crisp and balanced well with the acoustic sound from the pit with out getting too loud."

Happy Days 1st National Tour

The producers of the 1st National Tour of Happy Days: A New Musical have entrusted the audio engineering portion of the tour to a team lead by Brett Rothstein, a senior sound designer for Chinchilla Theatrical Sound. The tour which began in Los Angles this past October is playing week and two week long scheduled stops in cities such as Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, Toronto and Nashville. Written by Gary Marshall (the original creator of the TV series Happy Days) with music by the legendary Paul Williams, Happy Days brings back all of the original characters such including Fonzie, Richie, Pinky, The Cunningham’s and the Malachi Brothers.

Oliver National Tour
CTS provided the sound equipment package for the 2008-2009 national tour of Oliver. The tour which started September 16th in San Bernardino, California, crisscrossed the country playing one night, split week and one week engagements. Sound designer Shannon Slaton specified a sound system centered around 16 Meyer Sound M'elodie line array speakers. Additional coverage for the balcony was handled by 4 Meyer CQ series trapezoidal speaker cabinets. The front of house console of choice was a Yamaha PM5D with two DSP5D's positioned on stage and in the pit. Oliver used 24 channels of Sennheiser SK5212 wireless combined with a supportive HME wireless com system.

Oliver is Charles Dickens' touching tale of an orphan boy who runs away from the orphanage and tries to pick a pocket or two for Fagin, but gets caught. As Fagin tries to save him, all Oliver wants to do is go to his uncle, and live a good life. The beloved Oliver premiered in 1960 and has been a favorite of musical theatre fans ever since.

Nunsense 25th Anniversary Tour

NUNSENSE - Chinchilla Theatrical Sound (CTS) is proud to have been chosen to provide sound design, the tour equipment package, and an engineering team for the 25th Anniversary tour of Nunsense staring Sally Struthers. Brett Rothstein heads the design team, assisted by Jeremy Oleksa. The tour opened September 16th, 2008 in Montana featuring Meyer CQ series speakers mounted in towers with 2 Meyer 600-HPs supplying the low end. Because this tour plays short engagements in each city, CQ-1's and CQ-2's were chosen based on their accurate and crisp audio reproduction as well as their ease in cabling and tuning. "By using a design based around Meyer speakers mounted in towers, my engineer can load-in his entire system and tune the room in around 4 hours thereby cutting costs without sacrificing sonic quality," explains Rothstein, the shows senior designer.
